WGBX held their Back-to-School Bash in UW-Green Bay's Phoenix Club, Sept. 11, with live music from The Affliction and Avalanche. The Affliction brought people in with its heavy music and hardcore vocals. Avalanche played a two-hour set of cover songs. The band rocked out to songs by Franz Ferdinand, Green Day, Van Halen, Blink-182 and many more. Avalanche consists of four men. Claude Wait is in charge of lead vocals, Chris Roever plays lead guitar. John Smith is the drummer. Jay Voight is the bassist, as well as founder of Avalanche. "My opinion is it's awesome," Wait said. "It's everything I ever hoped it would be. We're all good friends, we all get along. That's very rare to find in a band. It's very relaxed." Wait said the band gets together every couple weeks to jam. Due to individual schedules, Avalanche isn't a band that fans can find every weekend. Besides doing the vocals for Avalanche, Wait also enjoys wake boarding. "I am addicted to wake boarding; I'm a wake boarding fanatic. I wake board every chance I can get," he said. Roever said he joined the band about a year and a half ago and his opinion and experience with it has been truly fantastic. "I think we're just a fun-loving bunch of guys," Roever said. "We don't take it too seriously. We don't want to be rock stars or anything; we just want to have a good time. The worst time is when we only get free tappers." Roever said music is everything to him. He enjoys playing guitar as well as drums. He also has a couple of children who are a big part of his life. Voight, who originally started the band six years ago, has kept it going despite having various members join and leave the band. "The best experience is just hanging with these guys outside of the band," Voight said. "The worst experience was our trailer blew a tire at 3 o'clock in the morning on the highway on the way home from a show." Musical talent also runs in Voight's family. His son, known as The Face, was the drummer in the evening's opening band, The Affliction. Audience members had an enjoyable time listening to The Affliction and singing along with Avalanche. People came in and out of the Phoenix Club between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to check out the jams. To check out some of Avalanche's covers visit the band's MySpace site.
