Just off East Mason Street in Green Bay, a small Mexican restaurant sits next to China Kitchen and Toppers. This restaurant, El Sarape, is without a doubt one of the most underrated places in town.

Walking in, customers are greeted by colorful murals and other customary Mexican decorations coating the walls. They are then taken into a surprisingly large side room where they are seated and given a basket of warm chips and delicious salsa.

From there, they can order a wide variety of traditional Mexican foods that are all very reasonably priced. No option is better than the Mario’s Special though.

The Mario’s Special comes with two huge burritos filled with your choice of steak, pork, ground beef, chicken or beans and can be topped with either cilantro and onions or a delicious cheese sauce, lettuce and tomatoes. It can easily be eaten for two meals and costs less than $8.

Another good option for people 21 and over is the happy hour special. Between 4 and 7 p.m., customers can buy a large strawberry, peach or regular margarita for just $4.25. The drinks come topped with a cherry and an orange slice, and the glass is rimmed with customary margarita sugar or salt.

El Sarape is a restaurant that everyone needs to try at least once. With its fun atmosphere and cheap prices, it’s easily one of the best kept secrets in Green Bay.
