Michaels maximizes time at Weidner

“Eat less, move more…and find your why,” was Jillian Michaels advice March 28at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.

Michaels a fitness trainer well known for her tough demeanor and forceful motivation tactics on the reality series “The Biggest Loser,” is on her “Maximize Your Life Tour.”

Along with her knowledge and personal experiences, Michaels brought her sense of humor and harsh truths to the stage. She did not filter herself for the audience and didn’t coddle anyone.

“Everyone has had that job where they seriously consider driving into a pole on the way to work,” Michaels said. “But then you think. ‘No, I should kill my boss and see if my job gets better first. If it still sucks the pole will still be there on my way home.’”

She went on to talk about how to make a change, how to “maximize your life.”

“Where ever you are in your life right now is all your fault,” Michaels said.

She believes people are responsible for their own happiness. Everyone makes choices that are entirely their own, but they let outside influencers dictate their decisions.

She referred to the outside influencers as “the responsibility sandwich,” a meal everyone takes a big bite of time and time again throughout his or her lifetime. Some of its ingredients include money, family, fear and obligation.

Michaels linked this to the feeling that we have a timeline to follow: high school, college, career, marriage, kids, etc., but people don’t have to follow this. Every person is capable of running their lives their way, but too many fall victim to the responsibility sandwich, Michaels said.

She also believes people have defense mechanisms they allow to rule their lives. Eating is a common example.

People don’t want to be obese, but somewhere along the line eating brought them the comfort they sought, and when something provides comfort, it normally becomes a habit, Michaels said.

The show was included three segments: diet, exercise and life.

Starting with diet, Michaels took a common sense approach. She  thinks people know what is healthy and what isn’t. Everyone knows that strawberries are better than chips and that is how to start by weighing options in available food choices.

She went on to discredited common excuses she hears in nutrition.

One she typically hears is that healthy food is too expensive.

“I also find a $6 cartoon of raspberries offensive,” Michaels said.

She understands that cost is a concern, but spending a little more up front can save a lot of money down the line on things like prescriptions, doctor visits and surgeries. Plus there are affordable and healthy options available.

Michaels asked members of the audience. “What amount of money could I pay you right now to never see your kids walk down the aisle?”

The answer was none. Michaels said she has never heard a different response. There is no amount of money people will accept to cut their lives short.

Michaels said people should think of healthy food as a health insurance policy. Pay a little more now to avoid paying more later, and so you don’t have to pay with things that money cannot buy.

The third excuse she tore apart was that counting calories is too much work and too tedious for a practical lifestyle.

“We are creatures of habit. We typically eat the same three to four meals for breakfast, the same three to four meals for lunch and the same three to four for dinner,” Michaels said. “Calculate them one time and submit them to memory.”

She also related this to reading labels on foods to pick better products. She encourages people to take the time to read labels and pick the healthier choices once. Then buy that product over and over again.

During the exercise segment Michaels said to just move, that the majority of the world doesn’t like to workout, but to just get it over with.

She used a scale related to her butt throughout the show. With food, she explained how to maintain, lose and gain. This scale was referring to overall body weight, but her version was for a more comedic effect.

She used the same scale when talking about exercise.

“If you aren’t sweaty, move butt faster… if you are blue, move butt slower,” Michaels said.

She said that she herself hates to workout, but she likes two-piece swimming suits and skinny jeans more.

This leads into “finding your why,” the last segment of her show.

“The ‘why’ is not the end goal,” Michaels said. “It’s all the little things in a person’s life that will get better as they keep going. These things include ability to look good in the things you want to wear, the ability to play with your kids or enhance your love life.”
