Many movies, some box office hits and some lesser-known critic favorites will be featured at the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. The awards will air live Jan. 29 on TNT and TBS at 7 p.m.
According to SAG's website, the awards started in 1995 to recognize individual and group work on drama and comedy series and motion picture casts, as well as stunt crews.
SAG is made up of about 100,000 working actors. Of these 100,000, two panels of 2,100 members are randomly chosen each year to decide who is nominated for awards. When the ballot is complete, all members vote to determine who wins.
This year, 15 movies, 32 TV series, made-for-TV movies and miniseries had cast and crew nominated for SAG awards. An additional five movies and TV series had stunt crews nominated for outstanding performances.
In an article about the 2012 nominees, Scott Bowles, USA Today writer, said SAG award nominations are usually good predictions of who will be nominated for an Oscar. Bowles said "The Help" and "The Artist," both up for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, were expected to be nominated for Oscars as well, but "Bridesmaids" was a surprise SAG nomination.
"The nominees in the top category suggest voters were in one of their moods where they're more concerned with honoring their favorite ensembles than with predicting the Best Picture category," said Guy Lodge, entertainment blogger for Hitflix.com, about the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture nominees.
In an online poll, Fourth Estate readers are predicting "Bridesmaids" will win the Outstanding Performance award. The film is up against "The Artist," "The Descendents," "The Help" and "Midnight in Paris." Other award categories and nominees are listed below.
