Coming into the summer there was buzz and speculation all over the NBA world about where Cavaliers forward LeBron James would end up as he became a free agent. The world received its answer on an hour-long ESPN special known as "The Decision" where James informed the world he would join the Miami Heat.
Lebron joining the Heat jolted the basketball world as he joined guard Dwayne Wade, who won a NBA Championship with the Heat in 2006, and forward Chris Bosh, who spent his previous years playing for the Toronto Raptors. The move was retroactive to the three talking about joining forces during the 2008 Summer Olympics.
In the aftermath of Lebron's big announcement, NBA Hall of Famers such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Karl Malone all spoke openly about disliking the decision James made to join two other superstars.
"There's no way, with hindsight, I would've ever called up Larry Bird, called up Magic Johnson and said, ‘Hey, look, let's get together and play on one team,'" Jordan said to ESPN after playing in a celebrity golf tournament in Nevada.
Johnson and Malone said similar things; they want to beat the best, not play with them.
Some opinions see this as the best way to win a championship and see the Heat as one of the best teams to beat, ever.
Former Knicks coach and current ESPN/ABC commentator, Jeff Van Gundy believes the Heat could beat the Chicago Bulls 1995-1996 single season record of 72-10. He didn't stop there. Van Gundy also believes they have a chance to break the Los Angeles Lakers 1971-1972 record of 33 straight victories.
Besides some of the legends of the game being shook up, even greater backlash was sent Lebron's way by members of the Cleveland Cavaliers organization. Owner Dan Gilbert wrote a letter to Cavalier fans on its website. In the letter Gilbert bashed James for leaving his hometown and not being the "so-called hero everyone thought he was."
As Gilbert continued to write he made many bold statements, none as big as, "I personally guarantee the Cleveland Cavaliers will win an NBA Championship before the self-titled "King" wins one."
Whether the case, this NBA season is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive and drama filled. Only time will tell whether Gilbert or Lebron will get a championship first, but with the roster the Heat have, it may not be too much time.
